Consider 1D Vlasov-poisson system with a …xed ion background and periodic condition on the space variable. First, we show that for general homogeneous equilibria, within any small neighborhood in the Sobolev space W s;p p > 1; s < 1 + 1 p of the steady distribution function, there exist nontrivial travelling wave solutions (BGK waves) with arbitrary minimal period and traveling speed. This implies that nonlinear Landau damping is not true inW s;p s < 1 + 1 p space for any homogeneous equilibria and any spatial period. Indeed, in W s;p s < 1 + 1 p neighborhood of any homogeneous state, the long time dynamics is very rich, including travelling BGK waves, unstable homogeneous states and their possible invariant manifolds. Second, it is shown that for homogeneous equilibria satisfying Penrose’s linear stability condition, there exist no nontrivial travelling BGK waves and unstable homogeneous states in some W s;p p > 1; s > 1 + 1 p neighborhood. Furthermore, when p = 2;we prove that there exist no nontrivial invariant structures in the H s > 3 2 neighborhood of stable homogeneous states. These results suggest the long time dynamics in the W s;p s > 1 + 1 p and particularly, in the H s > 3 2 neighborhoods of a stable homogeneous state might be relatively simple. We also demonstrate that linear damping holds for initial perturbations in very rough spaces, for linearly stable homogeneous state. This suggests that the contrasting dynamics in W s;p spaces with the critical power s = 1+ 1 p is a trully nonlinear phenomena which can not be traced back to the linear level. 1 Introduction Consider a one-dimensional collisionless electron plasma with a …xed homogeneous neutralizing ion background. The …xed ion background is a good physical approximation since the motion of ions is much slower than electrons. But we

Measurement of Landau damping and the evolution to a BGK equilibrium.

Linear Landau damping and nonlinear wave-particle trapping oscillations are observed with standing plasma waves in a trapped pure electron plasma. For low wave amplitudes, the measured linear damping rate agrees quantitatively with linear Landau damping theory. At larger amplitudes, the wave initially damps at the Landau rate, then regrows and oscillates, approaching a steady state, as predicte...

Experimental Investigation of Electron-Acoustic Waves in Electron Plasmas

Electron-acoustic waves have strong linear Landau damping, but are observed as nonlinear BGK modes in experiments with pure electron plasmas. The waves have phase velocity vφ ≈ 1.3v̄, in agreement with theory, and the longest wavelength BGK states exhibit only relatively weak damping. Shorter wavelength modes exhibit a strong decay instability which can be experimentally controlled.

Weakly collisional Landau damping and three-dimensional Bernstein-Greene-Kruskal modes: New results on old problems

Landau damping and Bernstein-Greene-Kruskal BGK modes are among the most fundamental concepts in plasma physics. While the former describes the surprising damping of linear plasma waves in a collisionless plasma, the latter describes exact undamped nonlinear solutions of the Vlasov equation. There does exist a relationship between the two: Landau damping can be described as the phase mixing of ...

شبیه سازی ذره‌ای میرایی غیر خطی لانداؤ در پلاسمای برخوردی و غیر برخوردی

In this article, non-linear Landau damping and generation of BGK mode in non-magnetized plasma are studied by using particle simulation. As plasma environment consists of electrons and ions, it is simulated by particle method and it is supposed that ions are considered as a motionless background. On the other hand, electron’s dynamic is obtained from solving Newton’s equation and the electron...

Construction of traveling clusters in the Hamiltonian mean-field model by nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and Bernstein-Greene-Kruskal waves.

Traveling clusters are ubiquitously observed in the Hamiltonian mean-field model for a wide class of initial states, which are not predicted to become spatially inhomogeneous states by nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and by nonlinear Landau damping. To predict such a cluster state from a given initial state, we combine nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and a construction method of Berns...
